I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure how many more international hockey games like last Sunday’s unbelievably tense blast in Vancouver this old fan can take before the medics are called in – and maybe the boys in the white coats as well. Why is it that these games are almost always so close, so tight, with the outcome a matter of nano seconds and extreme heroics?

This week the Dysart et al Council sat down for their first serious review of the municipality’s draft 2010 budget. On first blush it appears that once a few small pieces of the financial pie are added, Council will likely adopt a two percent increase on the Municipal levy. CAO Tammy McKelvey advised Council that the budget being presented represented the total 2009 levy, plus $45,350 in growth related taxes and a two percent increase representing an additional $90,725.

We Hafiz and Shelina Makani, of Shop N’ Save, Kinmount are responding to your one sided article titled “Kinmount Streetscape Delayed” on Thursday, February 11th, 2010. Firstly, to be very clear, we are not against the project as
mentioned in the article. The only thing that we are disputing is that the City of Kawartha Lakes eliminate high- curb and put drivable curbs in front of our store (Shop N’ Save Discount Store and Convenience). Our disabled and seniors can have easy access to the store and not try to climb the curb and it will eliminate a

To the Editor:

My compliments to Liz Danielsen for her article on the Kinmount sidewalks. The piece was well researched, well written, and presented all sides of the story. I am writing this letter to clarify a few points, as I wonder if the people signing Hafiz’s petition know all the details, and why they didn’t attend public meetings

Kyle Spencer certainly wasn’t expecting to be a midwife last Friday morning, the 12th February. He also wasn’t expecting for his third child to be born in the back of a taxi. Ideas and individual perceptions of the truth often differ, but never have different ideas failed to merge like they have over a small ‘streetscape’ project in beautiful downtown Kinmount. A project that has been designed, tendered, awarded and is even half completed is in a holding pattern because the beliefs of those looking forward to the improvements differ so dramatically from people who hope to see the project in its present state stopped. No woman should have to fear for their life or for the safety of their children. The sad truth, however, is that more than 50 per cent of Canadian women will experience abuse at some point in their lifetime – and that’s just one of the many grim statistics revealed in a 2009 YWCA national report. But amidst the darkness and tragic circumstances many of these women face, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, says Laura Redman, event developer for the YWCA of Peterborough, Victoria and Haliburton. And that light – although hard for many women to notice – emanates from the YWCA.
